Spring 2023 I had a full plate project load wise, but after I met with this sweet client and walked through their early 90s fixer upper they nabbed at auction, I was hooked...with nearly 5000sf of untapped potential. Like many 90s and 2000s builds, residential architects back then really loved everything to be on an angle. Catty-corner. Awkward, random walls, *gasp* carpet in the bathroom. It was basically a full gut, and the client trusted me enough to present all my ideas at once and just go for it.
The kitchen is the real MVP of this home. I had started out with 3 new concepts for the clients to consider, and when I sent them off for their review, I was literally crossing my fingers that they would select the double island option. As you can see, they went with it – and it will make hosting and family gatherings so nice for them! There was a desire to open up the kitchen into the main family room, but the client was also concerned she would not have enough storage in the new space losing walls. I was able to get rid of all of the funky angles, knockdown that center wall, give her two functional island spaces, a walk in pantry, and a new dropzone off of their garage entry door. The transformation here is almost unrecognizable.
Another favorite of this project was the master bathroom. I mentioned carpet above – of course we ripped that out and replaced with new tile flooring, gutted the shower to include a full tile base, custom niches and bench seat, and frameless glass enclosure. We swapped out the built in tub for a simply designed freestanding tub and the new stained vanities added warmth to this mainly tonal space. I really wanted to make this a timeless aesthetic that they never tire of, and I think we accomplished that goal!
I don’t want to skip out on the exterior either, as the entire efface of the home was torn off and I selected new finish materials for the whole facade. We also modified some of the architectural details to simplify and update the elevation.
The entire home was a dream project to work on and I cannot say enough about the wonderful clients, contractor, and subcontractors that I had the opportunity to work with. I had such a great time working to create their forever home!
